Health Tip Of  Week:

Strategies for Improving Blood Cholesterol

Accumulate at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise (e.g., 15 minutes twice per day) daily to help raise the good, HDL cholesterol in your bloodstream. Try brisk walking, cycling, swimming, dancing, and/or aerobics.

Reduce the amount of saturated fat you consume from dairy products, butter, red meat, sausages, bacon and tropical oils (coconut, palm). Center your meals around vegetables, fruits, beans/legumes, and whole grains with moderate amounts of animal foods that are lower in saturated fat but high in protein like nonfat dairy products, fish and egg whites.

Further reduce saturated fat intake by removing the skin from poultry, trimming the fat around meat, and choosing lean beef, pork, lamb or veal.

Avoid foods that contain trans-fat, or “partially hydrogenated” vegetable oils (check the ingredients on nutrition labels). Aim for no more than 2 grams of trans-fat per day. This fat is often found in fried foods as well as processed foods like stick margarine, crackers, baked goods & mixes, and desserts.

Eat foods that are naturally high in fiber, particularly soluble fiber which can help reduce LDL cholesterol. Soluble fiber is found in oats, fruits, root vegetables, barley and flaxseeds.

Eat unsaturated fats, especially monounsaturated and omega-3 fats. Cook, sauté and bake with canola oil or olive oil; enjoy nuts and seeds regularly (1 ounce = 1 serving); and eat a 3-ounce serving of fish at least twice per week.

Eat 4 to 6 smaller meals per day instead of 1 or 2 large meals.

Reduce the amount of added sugars and alcohol you consume to help reduce triglycerides in the bloodstream and assist with weight management. Big sources of added sugars include sodas, juices, baked goods, candy, sweetened beverages (like iced tea and coffee), and many breakfast cereals.

Consider eating foods, beverages and condiments containing plant sterols or stanols to help reduce LDL cholesterol. Plant sterols/stanols can be found in some brands of margarine, yogurt, salad dressing, and other food products as well as Ensure® Heart Health. Check out the nutrition labels.

Lose weight if you are overweight by exercising regularly and eating foods that are high in fiber and low in calories.

Include soy protein in your diet daily. Try: roasted soy beans, soy nut butter, steamed edamame, tofu, soy milk, and veggie meat alternatives (burgers, nuggets, hot dogs, etc.).
